Clinical

We understand that students and caregivers often come to STEP during a challenging point in their educational journey. We see each student as an unique individual, approaching their strengths and needs with genuine curiosity and compassion. In every interaction, we strive to create an experience grounded in authenticity, respect, and care.

At STEP, clinicians work with a caseload of only 1–2 students at a time. This intentionally small caseload allows for close collaboration with caregivers and past or current providers, ensuring a comprehensive and holistic understanding of each student’s needs.

Individual Therapy

Clinicians meet with students once a week for scheduled session and are available as needed throughout the day to meet a student’s needs.

Group Therapy
STEP clinicians runs three clinical groups per week and cover topics such as identity, coping strategies, self-esteem, healthy relationships, and social pragmatics.

Psychiatric Support
STEP utilizes a part-time psychiatrist who meets with students 1:1 during the evaluation and also observes students in the learning environment. The goals and objectives vary depending on each individual case. In general, the psychiatrist is a resource for caregivers and students who may need psychoeducation, collaboration with providers, or support around medication.

Caregiver Meetings
Within the first week of the evaluation period, a 90-minute in-person meeting is established with caregivers. Caregivers meet with STEP’s Clinical Director and the student’s clinician to discuss the student’s history, family dynamics, and other elements that impact the student. It is an important opportunity to get the caregivers’ perspective as well as assess if any support or resources may be helpful.

Weekly Updates
In addition to a weekly email that goes out to districts and caregivers that summarizes the prior week, clinicians have scheduled weekly phone calls with caregivers to communicate updates and progress.

CARILOOP
CARILOOP is a resource that Dearborn STEP offers to caregivers while students are at the program and 3-months beyond discharge. Caregivers are connected with Care Coaches who offer guidance, research, and resources for a wide range of needs, including childcare, elder care, mental and family health, and financial and legal matters.
